After leaving Jordan, we headed back down to the red sea, hung a sharp right, and headed toward the suez canal. Suez Canal, Arabic Qanāt al-Suways, is a sea-level waterway running north-south across the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt to connect the Mediterranean and the Red seas. The canal separates the African continent from Asia, and it provides the shortest maritime route between Europe and the lands lying around the Indian and western Pacific oceans. It is one of the world’s most heavily used shipping lanes. The canal extends 193 km (120 miles) between Port Said (Būr Saʿīd) in the north and Suez in the south, with dredged approach channels north of Port Said, into the Mediterranean, and south of Suez.
We anchored about 5pm and watched as hundreds of ships exited the canal. There is 2 way traffic in the canal but not at all points along the canal. We would need to wait till 6am in the morning to begin our 12 hr trek.
In the meantime, we decided to take our new friends, Scott and Anita to dinner at one of the specialty restaurants, the Bayou. We'd already been about 5x and know it's good. We had a 5pm reservation to ensure we got a window table to watch all the ship's. As promised, Scott and I wore our Jordanian head gear.
It was another 3hr dinner, which is great.
It was a relaxing day overall. Not much else to report. Tomorrow I'll have pics of our transit of the suez canal.
